At one time or another every homeowner will need to repair, update or just make some changes to their home. Depending on your skill level and the time you are able to invest, you may need to hire a professional. One of the most important factors is that you and your contractor communicate and you both have the same vision of the finished product. As far as choosing a contractor, always ask for references, the more the better. Talk to your local building supply find out who's consistently busy, if they're busy there must be a reason. Be wary of some one that can start tomorrow. Since Vermont does not require a contractor to be licensed, due diligence on your part is important. Ask lots of questions; ask to see other completed projects. Talk to the home owner of the contractors last project. Was it completed on time and on budget? Was the finished product what they envisioned? Document as much as possible. I love email communication because both you and the contractor can reference the discussion. There are hundreds of talented craftsmen here in the Deerfield Valley. Ask your Realtor. If youre buying a home, ask the previous owner who they used. Most tradesmen in the Valley are hardworking, ethical, and reliable and love a challenge. They also know the area well and know what works. Remember the three most important things about building, renovating or upgrading your home are: communication, communication and communication!!
